A harrowing dowry-related murder case in Greater Noida has shed light on the brutal realities of domestic violence and the deep-seated societal pressures surrounding the practice. The tragic death of 26-year-old Nikki Bhati, who was allegedly set on fire by her husband’s family, has sparked outrage and a renewed call for justice.
According to police reports and family statements, the violence was the culmination of years of alleged abuse. Nikki was married to Vipin Bhati in 2016, at which time an initial dowry was provided. However, persistent demands for an additional ₹36 lakh and a new car began shortly after, turning the marriage into a cycle of torment. The victim’s family claims the abuse was relentless, describing the husband as a “butcher.”
The fatal assault reportedly occurred late one night at the family’s home. The victim’s six-year-old son became the primary eyewitness, providing a heartbreaking account of his mother being doused in kerosene by her mother-in-law, Daya, before being set on fire by her husband, Vipin. With 70% burns, Nikki was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to her injuries on the way.
In a disturbing turn of events, Vipin Bhati allegedly posted Instagram stories feigning grief and attempting to frame his wife’s death as a suicide, just hours before his arrest. Both Vipin and his mother, Daya, were subsequently arrested. Two other accused family members, Vipin’s father Satveer and brother Rohit, remain absconding. The police have stated their commitment to bringing all involved parties to justice. The case also saw a controversial police encounter in which Vipin was shot in the leg during an alleged escape attempt, a move that has fueled public debate on due process.
