New Delhi: Widespread protests erupted across parts of India after the brutal lynching of a Hindu man in Bangladesh, triggering outrage, street demonstrations, and diplomatic unease between the two neighbouring nations.
The protests were triggered by the killing of Dipu Chandra Das, a Hindu man who was allegedly lynched by a mob in Bangladesh following accusations of blasphemy. The incident, widely circulated on social media and reported by international media, has intensified concerns over the safety of religious minorities in the country. Bangladeshi authorities have condemned the killing and stated that arrests have been made, but the incident has already had repercussions far beyond Bangladesh’s borders.
In New Delhi, hundreds of protesters gathered outside the Bangladesh High Commission, raising slogans and demanding justice for the victim. Members of Hindu organisations, including the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, led demonstrations, accusing the Bangladeshi authorities of failing to protect minorities. The protests turned tense as demonstrators attempted to breach police barricades, leading to brief clashes with security personnel. Several protesters were detained to prevent the situation from escalating further.
Similar demonstrations were reported in multiple Indian states, with protestors holding placards, burning effigies, and calling on the Indian government to take a strong diplomatic stand. Many demanded international intervention and stricter accountability for crimes against minorities in Bangladesh.
The incident has strained ties between India and Bangladesh. In the wake of the protests, Bangladesh temporarily suspended certain visa services at its New Delhi mission, citing security concerns. Diplomatic channels have since been activated, with officials from both sides exchanging messages over the fallout from the killing.
